Graphics Designing Jobs

Graphic design offers a diverse choice of specialties, ranging from commercial and industrial design (cars, furniture, appliances, etc.) to advertising media (merchandising, marketing, Web design, newspapers, and publishing). Of the more than half a million designer jobs in the United States, positions in graphic design comprise about 40 percent.

The impact of design is everywhere - in the layout of People magazine, on your Starbucks coffee cup, in the logo of this site, and perhaps in the design of the chair you're sitting in right now. It would take a page or more to list all the positions available in the industry, so what's important to know is that there are many specialties and you can choose whichever direction most appeals to you.

In spite of the millions of dollars made by advertising firms and by the companies they represent, the graphic designers are not at the top of the heap when it comes to the big bucks. With salaries averaging in the mid-thirties, you can expect to make a decent living, but as with any job, it's time, talent, and advancement that will bring the promotion to Creative Director and the bigger salary that goes with it. Freelancers, quite common in the industry, can also make good money, but must bear the costs of running their own business and the financial risks of operating solo.

Graphic Designing Career

Have you ever been seduced into buying something by a wildly creative ad - or at least been tempted to try it out? How many of the choices you make when shopping at the mall were influenced by an ad or a phrase or a picture, or all of the above? If you know how powerful imagery can be in influencing your habits, then you know that marketing and advertising are big business.

For an artist with an eye for people and their needs and desires, graphic design seems a logical choice - it allows you to utilize your talent in a productive and satisfying career. In the arts industries, the graphic design area is expected to continue to grow at an average pace, and to create more job availability than all the other creative arts industries combined.
Our fast-paced world of video entertainment and online design relies heavily on the talents of designers, which is also the case in other media-heavy realms of advertising, such as publishing and merchandising. Opportunities to specialize in various media forms and industries abound. A noticeable talent, a degree, people skills, and a reputable portfolio are the key elements for landing a top job in graphic design.

Education Required

Some graphic designers are self-taught. For the most part, though, you'll need a minimum of a bachelor's degree, and you'll obviously need to be familiar the software used to create and modify designs. Creativity and talent are a must, but to be competitive, a portfolio of accomplished work is essential to landing the best job; it may be the only difference between you and the next applicant.

A keen ability to analyze and understand what customers need and the ability to translate those needs visually is an inherent talent that you may need more than schooling to acquire. Without some basic instincts and skills, a degree may get you a job, but it won't make you marketable for the top jobs. However, a degree from a school that specializes in fine arts or graphic design may go a long way in developing not just your creative skills, but your analytical ones as well.

How to apply for a Student Visa?

An early appointment with the nearest US Embassy or Consulate through mail, telephone or a visit is required. It is best to apply 12- 18 months in advance for the visa to make sure that there is sufficient time for visa processing.

Visa procedures often vary from country to country, for example, how to pay the visa application processing fee and how to make an appointment for an interview.

All necessary documents such as a valid passport should be kept ready to support the application procedure. Details about employment, financial status and reason of travel are crucial information.

You'll need to pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee, pay the visa processing fee (the procedure will differ from one U.S. Embassy/Consulate to another, so visit the website of the U.S. Embassy, and make an appointment for the visa interview (again, procedures will differ, so visit the website of the U.S. Embassy).Visa fee ought to be paid before an appointment and it is refundable.

After submission of the application with passport, and other supporting documents to the US Embassy or Consulate, it is usually screened by the Consular Officer and in many cases by officials in Washington DC. Visa may be issued within a few weeks or may be rejected. It is best to apply early for the visa to make sure that there is sufficient time for visa processing.
Additional information will be required in some cases. Any cases of security concern may delay your application procedure and you may be required to appear for additional interviews and also disclose further information.

The U.S. Embassy/Consulate cannot issue a visa more than 120 days before the actual start of the program in the United States. However, visa applicants are encouraged to apply for their visa as soon as they are prepared to do so.

If you have been issued a visa to enter the United States, you will not be allowed to enter the country more than 30 days before the start of your program, if you are an initial entry student. Returning students do not have this requirement.

In most countries, first time student visa applicants are required to appear for an in-person interview. Keep in mind that June, July, and August are the busiest months in most consular sections, and interview appointments are the most difficult to get during that period. Students need to plan ahead to avoid having to make repeat visits to the Embassy.

Educational Accreditation

Educational accreditation is a process through which a third-party agency judges an educational institution to determine whether it conforms to certain defined quality and service standards. Institutions can seek accreditation from governmental or private crediting bodies, depending on the laws of the land. Education accreditation can be categorized into:

  • Accreditation of an institution: Whole institution is accredited by the agency
  • Accreditation of a specific discipline/course: Only a specific program in an institution is accredited
  • Accreditation of both the institution and the specific program: Both the education program and the institute is accredited
Accreditation is not a way to rank an institution. Rather, it is a process that validates the integrity of an educational institution. It is an indication that the institution or program meets certain standards of excellence. Accrediting agencies require that institutions engage in constant self-assessment in order to keep their programs up to date.

Accreditation meaning
  • For Students: Accreditation increases the popularity of an institution as a destination for students. Higher education in most countries across the world is steeply priced. Accreditation insures students against being cheated and guarantees value for money
  • For Educational Institutions: Accreditation offers the most direct advantage to the institution by building a brand value for it, as a preferred organization to be associated with
  • For the Discipline: Accreditation helps popularize a discipline among prospective students. It is especially beneficial for new and upcoming disciplines, useful to industries that face a shortage of skilled manpower.
  • For Employers: Accredited institutions and disciplines provide national and international employers a good idea of the skill levels of a prospective employee even before any actual assignment is done at the workplace. Accreditation provides an assurance to employers that program graduates are competent for entry into the workplace.
  • For Business: Recognition by international accrediting bodies opens up borders and facilitates free movement of skilled labor across countries.
  • For Nations: National and International accreditation, based on stringent quality parameters, potentially builds the image of a nation as a destination for students seeking higher education, and boosts educational tourism.

Traveling Expenses for Singapore

Singapore has a world class tourism industry that caters to travelers from every section and any geographical location.

A self-arranged tour to Singapore is totally dependent on the income/budget of the individual/family. Arranged holiday or business tours come with a certain price tag and due to the variety of travel schemes provided by different tour operators, a fixed price is difficult to be quoted. It is, however, more expensive than its Southeast Asian counterparts. An individual budget of Singapore $150.00/per day, including accommodation is a viable budget.

The currency used in Singapore is Dollar ($). Foreign currency can be exchanged in banks though the exchange rates may vary. Service tax is applicable on currency exchange.

It must be noted that individuals entering/leaving Singapore with travellers check or monetary instruments (CBNI) to the total value of above Singapore $ 30,000 (or its equivalent in any foreign currency) must fill up the CBNI Report (Traveller) form (Form NP727).

Medical Insurance for Studying Abroad

Medical insurance covers both domestic medical and international medical insurances. An international medical insurance may suit one's short or long term international medical concerns, depending upon the need such as the extent of single/multiple plan trips for individuals or families. Generally, international medical insurance covers emergency medical expenses, hospital stays and major surgeries.

Medicines carried while traveling must be checked to ensure that they are not controlled or banned by the government in the traveling country. Allowed medicines should also be correctly labeled in a container along with the prescription from a recognized doctor. It may be more viable to show personal health records along with the medical prescription.

Maximum insurance covers from Indian students abroad come from accident and health ailments followed by pregnancy. Some universities have their own set of requirements while others have set up ties with Indian insurance companies in covering Indian students.

Alternative Modes of Travel

Though air travel is luxurious and time saving, many other alternative modes of travel have emerged with the advancement of travel technology.

Attractive tour packages with various luxury liners are offered by well known tour operators such as Cox & Kings. A normal cruise package from India to Singapore via other exciting countries may take two to five days and cost within a range of INR 19,000 to 36,000 per person.

Plan your journey well

To ensure that a journey becomes memorable and enjoyable, plans need to be chalked out well in advance. It is more important in the context of foreign tours as this involves possession of valid passports, travel documents and receiving valid visa well in advance of the departure date.

One also should get accustomed to the basic immigration and custom norms along with living conditions in the destination country beforehand to make the trip most pleasurable and exciting.

Need of Insurance

Medical insurance covers both domestic medical and international medical insurances. An international medical insurance may suit one's short or long term international medical concerns, depending upon the need such as the extent of single/multiple plan trips for individuals or families. Generally, international medical insurance covers emergency medical expenses, hospital stays and major surgeries.

Medicals carried while travelling must be checked to ensure that it is not controlled or banned by the government in the travelling country. Allowed medicines should also be correctly labeled in a container along with the prescription from a recognized doctor. It may be more viable to show personal health records along with the medical prescription.

Of the 1,10,000 students which go abroad every year from India, medical insurance is almost compulsory. It is mandatory for select foreign university students to buy medical and health insurance. Maximum insurance covers from Indian students abroad come from accident and health ailments followed by pregnancy.

Some universities have their own set of requirements while others have set up ties with Indian insurance companies in covering up Indian students.

Accreditation in the USA

In the United States, the federal government does not regulate colleges and universities directly. The various US states issue licenses to education institutions to run business and issue degrees. But this license varies from state to state and it does not mean that a licensed institute meets certain minimum standards.

The only way to know whether the institute provided quality education is to see whether the institute is accredited or not. To get accreditation from a recognized accrediting agency, an institution must meet and adhere to the standards set by the agency.

You need to take care that the college you plan to attend is properly accredited or you may find that your degree is not valued anywhere.

There are two basic categories of accreditation for degree granting institutions in the United States: institutional and programmatic. The institutional accreditation reviews and accredits the whole institution. Programmatic accreditation or specialized accreditation recognizes specific programs, departments, or schools within an institution. Several different accrediting bodies carry out each of these types of accreditation. Institutional accreditation can be divided into two types: regional accreditation and national accreditation.
