Biotechnology Education

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science based on Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Engineering. It refers to technology developed by modifying biological organisms to improve potency, efficiency, yield or longevity, as relevant. With over 100 Biotech companies, India is positioned at number three in Biotech industrial growth, just behind Australia and China. In 2006-07, India achieved a significant growth of 33% in Biotech industry. India is set to become the Biotech capital of the world in the coming years, owing to a sustained annual industrial growth rate of over 30% in the last six years.

To work as a Biotechnologist, a degree such as Biotechnology, Bioscience, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related Biological science is generally required. Increasingly, specialization in the specific area of biotechnology plus relevant work experience is considered an additional bonus.
