Biotechnology Careers Opportunities

The Government of India provides large-scale employment to most Biotechnologist in its research laboratories. Growing at almost 30% during this decade, Indian Biotechnology industry is likely to touch the mark of US$ 5 Billion by the end of 2010. In the next few years India would be requiring 4 million Biotechnologists.

Salary

  • India: In India, private sector pharmaceutical companies generally offer Rs. 12000-20000 per month to an entry-level postgraduate. Those employed as researchers in government sector can have a starting salary of Rs.9000 per month along with government perks/allowances. The starting salary in private Inc, India for a Biotechnologist with PhD level education, is pegged at Rs. 25,000 to 35,000 per month.
  • US: In the US, the average salary of Agriculture Biotechnologists is approximately $ 50,000 at the lower end with $ 72,000 at the higher end. Independent research Agricultural Biotechnologist with a PhD level education can earn over $80,000 per year.
  • Europe: In Europe, the average starting salaries can vary between 15000 to 23000 Euros per year for permanent employees with specialized degrees. In the UK the average starting salary for a Food Agriculturist is anywhere between 19000 to 24000 pounds.
  • China: In China, the average salary of a Biotechnology research scientist is around $30000 a year.
